About 4 Non Blondes

4 Non Blondes is a band that originated in San Francisco in 1989. Comprised of four talented women, the band quickly built a loyal local following and garnered substantial attention from record labels. Their powerful ballad, "What's Up?" played a significant role in their rise to fame. Bass player Christa Hillhouse was so moved by the song when she first heard Linda Perry playing it that she stopped in her tracks and expressed her deep admiration. This heartfelt track would become their breakthrough hit that resonated with audiences worldwide.

After attracting the attention of record labels, 4 Non Blondes chose to sign with Interscope Records. They recorded their debut album at a studio in Calabasas, California. Unfortunately, the band faced some challenges during the recording process. Drummer Wanda Day was let go due to her struggles with drug addiction, and guitarist Shaunna Hall departed from the band due to creative differences with the album's producer. Despite these setbacks, the band persisted, determined to create music that would leave a lasting impact.

In 1992, Interscope released "Dear Mr. President" as the first single from 4 Non Blondes' debut album. While it achieved modest success in the UK and reached the lower end of the top 40 in New Zealand, it was the second single that catapulted the band to international stardom. "What's Up?" topped the charts in seven countries and reached the impressive position of #2 in three more, including the UK. In the US, it peaked at #14, making 4 Non Blondes the first openly lesbian group to break into the top 40.

Following their massive success with "What's Up?", the band released "Spaceman" as their third single. While it reached the top 40 in six countries overseas, it would be their last song to chart. Their final single from the album was "Drifting," except for the exclusive release of "Superfly" in Spain. These tracks showcased the band's versatility and musical prowess.

As they began working on their second album, conflicts arose within the band. Linda Perry delved into writing melancholic music inspired by Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," while the rest of the band wanted to continue creating rock songs akin to "Superfly." The label also pushed for a follow-up to "What's Up?", adding to the tension. Eventually, Perry, dissatisfied with the direction of the band and the album, departed by the end of the year.

Following her departure, Linda Perry went on to release two solo albums on Interscope Records in 1996 and 1999. Despite poor sales of her solo work, fate had another surprise in store for her. Just three weeks after finding herself financially broke, P!nk sought out Perry, leading to a highly successful songwriting partnership. Their collaboration began with the Perry-penned song "Get The Party Started," which became a #4 smash hit.

Reflecting on her time with 4 Non Blondes, Linda Perry expressed her discontent with their debut album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More, in a 2011 interview. She admitted not liking the record, citing her dissatisfaction with the production that veered away from the band's intended style. It's evident that their journey was not without its challenges, but their impact on the music industry is undeniable.

And there you have it! 4 Non Blondes may have only released one album, but their legacy lives on through the emotional depth and resonance of "What's Up?" and their other heartfelt tracks. Their music continues to captivate audiences and remind us of the power of authenticity and courage. So, if you haven't already, go ahead and experience the magic of 4 Non Blondes!
